Concrete Driveways & Crossovers

What’s Included with Our Concrete Driveways & Crossovers Service

A driveway is only as good as what is under it. Each concrete driveway starts with the old surface removed, the ground excavated and a compacted road base laid, then formwork set to the right falls so water runs away from the garage and the house. Most of Perth sits on Bassendean sand, which drains well but has to be compacted properly before anything is poured. For a standard car driveway that usually means a 100 mm slab of N25 concrete on SL72 mesh. Heavier vehicles, coastal sites and reactive clay in places like Midland and the hills call for thicker slabs and stronger mixes, commonly N32 near the coast. Finishes run from a plain broom finish to coloured, honed or exposed aggregate. Saw-cut control joints go in soon after the pour so shrinkage cracks follow the joints instead of wandering across the slab. In summer the pour is booked for the cool of the morning, because Perth heat dries the surface faster than it can be finished. A driveway is not finished at your boundary. The crossover is the strip of paving that crosses the verge from the kerb to your boundary, and it sits on the road reserve, so every Perth council requires an application and approval before it is built or replaced. Work should not start until you have it. Councils set their own rules, but typical requirements include a minimum width of 3 m at the boundary, a maximum of around 6 m for a single residential crossover, a right-angle alignment to the kerb and a small fall back towards the road. Several councils pay a contribution towards a first crossover if it is plain grey concrete: the City of Joondalup lists $375, the City of Cockburn $500, the City of Wanneroo up to half the cost to a cap of $1,329.30, and the City of Stirling uses a formula based on the crossover length. Amounts and conditions change, so check your council before you choose a finish. Dial Before You Dig comes first, because services run under the verge. Published Perth guides put a crossover on its own at about $1,800 to $3,500, and a full single-car crossover and driveway at about $4,900 to $7,000 including council permit fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

Published 2026 Perth price guides put plain concrete at roughly $60 to $95 per square metre supplied and laid, liquid limestone at about $80 to $130 and exposed aggregate at around $100 to $160. For a 40 m² driveway that works out to about $2,400 to $3,800 in plain concrete. Removing an old driveway, the slope, the access and the finish all move the price.
