Grinding is where most polished concrete starts. Diamond tooling takes the top off the slab to remove old coatings, glue, stains and high spots, and the same machines then take it through finer grits. Grind-and-seal stops early and finishes with a topical sealer, the most affordable option and common in renovations once the tiles or carpet come up. Honed concrete is ground through several grits and finished with a penetrating sealer, giving a matte, low-slip surface that works outdoors too, including on driveways and around pools. Mechanically polished concrete is ground through progressively finer diamonds and densified, so the gloss comes from the concrete itself rather than a coating. Published Perth guides put grind-and-seal at about $79 to $135 per square metre, honed concrete at about $90 to $180, and a mechanical polish at about $170 to $210. A slab that was never poured for polishing may show patches, old repairs and aggregate you did not expect, so we look at it first and tell you which finish is realistic.
